bali om, what is the meaning of om
What is the Meaning
of Om in Bali ?
In Bali, the majority of Balinese people practice a form of the Hindu religion called Agama Hindu Dharma ("Religion of the Hindu doctrine"). Also called Agama Tirtha ("Religion of the Holy Waters"), it represents a unique amalgamation of foreign Hindu and Buddhist elements that were grafted onto a base of preexisting, indigenous (animist) customs.

Hinduism and Buddhism arrived in Bali partly via Java and partly direct from India, between the 8th and 16th centuries. Elements of the two religions have developed further and merged here. The symbol and spoken word 'om' is commonly used in Balinese Mantra, more specifically by the Balinese Hindu Priests in leading group prayers or in preparing holy water.

The lower curve of the Sanskrit letter represents the dream state; the upper curve the waking state. The wavy curve issuing from the right symbolizes deep, dreamless awareness. The crescent moon shape stands for "maya" or the veil of illusion. The dot above it marks the transcendent state. With yoga, one may find transcendence to embrace the true self by passing through the veil, liberating these states, into Divine Union. Quoted from http://www.theyogastudio.com/

The vibration produced by chanting Om in the physical universe corresponds to the original vibration that first arose at the time of creation. The sound of Om is also called Pranava, meaning that it sustains life and runs through Prana or breath. Om also represents the four states of the Supreme Being. The three sounds in Om (AUM) represent the waking, dream and deep sleep states and the silence which surrounds Om represents the "Turiya" state.
